The Handi Quilter Has Moved In!

Hello lovely quilting people!

This week’s video is a very exciting one because my longarm quilting adventure officially begins!

We start off in the studio with a bit of a tidy-up and get everything ready for what is probably the biggest studio delivery yet. Then it’s time to hit the road, all the way down to Dorset to collect my longarm quilting machine.

And when I say we went there and back in ONE DAY, I really mean it! It was a very long day and a lot of driving, but it was completely worth it.

Once we were finally back in Rochdale, it was time to get the longarm into the studio but it was too late and we were too tired to start putting everything together. I had a day off on Thursday to rest and to look after my haberdashery hound Luna as Mum and Sister were out getting some tattoos (Sister getting tattooed not Mum).

On Friday, me and Mum got to work putting the longarm up, I was just sat down for most of the putting up part but we only had one screwdriver, (there were lots of screwing, unscrewing and rescrewing the different parts on to the machine.) so I was in charge of the most important task of the whole day - making the cups of tea! Many were needed!

Seeing it actually set up in the studio for the first time was such an exciting moment. After talking about getting a longarm for so long, it suddenly felt very real!

Of course, I couldn’t wait to start using it, so once everything was set up, I made my first test pieces. These are very much about getting to know the machine, practising the controls and getting a feel for how the quilting process works. There’s definitely going to be a learning curve, but that’s all part of the fun.

For now, I’ll be spending plenty of time practising on test sandwiches and working on my skills with the goal of eventually I start offering longarm quilting to customers later in the year. I’m really looking forward to seeing how much I can improve over the next few months.
